Dik van Doorn back in the band!

Dik van Doorn back in the band! - first concert during the Practicum workshop Brassband of the World Music Competition in Kerkrade

It will happen to you… suddenly unable to play your beloved cornet for quite some time due to an accident at work. This happened to Dik van Doorn, e-flat cornet player of Brassband Rijnmond, in September 2021. Due to a fatal fall from a staircase while working, his teeth, mouth and lips were seriously damaged. As a result, playing the cornet was no longer possible for a long time. As a member of the first hour, Dik is “the face” of and rightly so “Mister Brassband Rijnmond”. It was a huge disappointment for both Dik himself and the band that Dik couldn't be there anymore. This scenario is of course a nightmare for any wind musician. Dik was given a long forced rest period with medical interventions and it was even feared that it would no longer be possible to play a wind instrument at all. Fortunately, after a long recovery period, an improvement has been noted and there is light at the end of the tunnel. Recently Dik has picked up a wind instrument again and everyone is very happy with it. Not yet the es-cornet but the alto horn. For the time being, this instrument seems more suitable for Dik and of course there is hope that the cornet will also succeed in the long term. Dik's first performance on alto horn with Brassband Rijnmond for the public will take place on Friday 15 July 2022 during the World Music Competition in Kerkrade. Brassband Rijnmond will then offer (inter)national conductors the opportunity to work with a Dutch top brass band during the Practicum Workshop Brass Band. Brass band icon and renowned conductor Luc Vertommen will work with the candidates on two compositions. Of course, this performance is quite exciting and challenging for Dik after such a long, forced rest period. However, the band and Dik are confident that he will perform his part on alto horn in an excellent way and are delighted that Dik is part of the band again. We wish Dik good luck with his concert and his further recovery.
